It is also part of the Borough of East Hampton, which means that it is near a railroad line.In the years prior to its construction, Smithtown was used as a hospital and barracks for troops moving into the area in anticipation of the Army's entrance into World War I. In addition, there were several mines that were found during the past as well.The first part of the story concerning Smithtown was set during the World War I when it was home t o several separate military installations. It was here that the first radio stations were created.Also during this time, there were several bridges that connected the town to nearby towns. Today, the industrial sector of the area has dwindled to where Smithtown High School is located.The second part of the story regarding Smithtown focuses on the post-World War II period, when Long Island had become a center for manufacturing. As such, the borough has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.In this period, Smithtown High School was also formed. It is part of the borough of East Hampton, which means that it was never tied to the railroad system like the other schools were.During the past, the only way to get to Smithtown High School was to use a ferry. Today, it is possible to take a private car from Midland Beach to Smithtown so that parents can drop their children off and pick them up without having to worry about getting on a train.
